Can a Jewish Israeli and a Palestinian stand together at the site of the Nova massacre on the Gaza border, listening to bombs falling, and still believe in peace?
I went with Eva Dalak — a Muslim Palestinian citizen of Israel who has lots of family in Gaza, and my co-host of the podcast Women Ending War — to find out.
On the anniversary of October 7, the two of us journeyed to the impossible, traveling along the Gaza rim, visiting sites of death and destruction. while listening to the ongoing bombardment of Gaza – and worked on holding space for one another in the midst of the pain. We traveled to the temporary home of Roni Keidar, a lifelong peace activist and resident of Netiv Ha’asara, one of the villages on the Gaza rim that was badly hit whose traumas from October 7 are still raw and real, and listened to her story, too. Roni shared her family story, and Eva shared hers.
What happened next? Is there room in the hearts of Israelis and Palestinians for each other’s pain and sorrow? Can we stand in the location of so much hurt and still forge a different path? And can women lead the way to new thinking towards activating peace?
