The Trump-Bibi Bromance: Buckle up...
The deal happened not because of trump's brilliance but because even the most hardened megalomaniacs are scared of him. And bowing down....
Trump has already taken credit for peace in the Middle East.
Are we surprised?
To be clear: The deal happened because Bibi decided to bow down to Trump while he completely dismissed and sabotaged Biden. That's it. It's not because of trump's diplomatic skills (he has none.) It's because Bibi wants trump to be his friend.
Let's revisit the awful history of stalled deals over the past year. The current cease fire deal is almost exactly the same as the one that Biden was promoting for most of this war. Throughout the war, Bibi Netanyahu sabotaged negotiations over and again. His own people said so. HIs own negotiators said so. The minute they were close, he actively and purposely moved the goal posts to make sure it wouldn't happen. Over and again.
The only reason the deal happened now, the day before trump entered office is because Bibi decided NOT to sabotage it this time. He did all the things that he wouldn't do before. He let Ben Gvir resign, risked the coalition, and agreed to a ceasefire.
Why? Why now? It's very simple. He is snuggling up with Trump hoping they will be besties for the next four years and Trump will help keep Bibi in power and free to do what he wants. Over and over Bibi Netanyahu had the chance to make peace. By not making peace, he kept his coalition in tact, kept the war going, kept the dreams of the radical-religious right alive -- including their overt goals to wipe out Gaza completely and install Jewish settlements there. He did all of that. Destroyed his country's economy and morale, ignored the displaced and the reservists, bombarded Gaza with endless killing, and along the way sacrificed dozens of hostages who many people in his coalition consider expendable. He did all that. For 15 months.
AND AND AND -- at the same time, by sabotaging talks for a year, Bibi Netanyahu actively contributed to the election of Trump. The war was the single biggest issue driving Democratic voters away from the democratic party. Single. Biggest. Issue. All the polls showed this to be true. With everything else we know about the election, the fact is that Biden's inability to end the war cost the democratic party a ton of credibility.
And here we are....
This whole moment was manufactured and curated by the power wielding fascist wannabes of the world. Trump and Bibi, bosom buddies. So tight that Bibi doesn't even need Ben Gvir and Smotrich anymore....(silver lining?) Bibi and Trump, Kings of the World.
This is the world order right now. All else is just a side show. We are all props.
But how long will this trump-bibi bromance last? Is it real? The big test will come in 42 days when Stage Two of the ceasefire is set to take effect. Bibi is planning on finding ways to avoid doing it. He's already planting the seeds for "renewed fighting" and already letting us all know that he has no intention of really keeping the deal. And he has said that he believes that he and Trump are of the same mind here...... But is that really true? Meaning, is it true that Trump is ALSO okay with renewed war? I'm not sure.... And is it REALLY true that Trump is a die-hard pal of Bibi, or is it just a relationship of convenience for Trump?
We'll find out soon enough....And so many real lives hang in the balance. Including the 64 hostages who aren't even on the list for Stage One returns. So there's all that....
But while we're living in this vice that twists our collective souls, at least we should make sure that nobody rewrites history. So let's retain our clarity about this. Trump did NOT create this deal because of his brilliance at negotiating. It happened on Jan 19 because Bibi Netanayahu, like so many other powerful narcissists and megalomaniacs in the world, decided to kiss up to this man, hoping he will save him and keep him in power.... Right now, that dynamic is helping bring a good result for hostages, gazans and those who want this awful war to end. For now. But no matter what happens next, it's going to be a bumpy ride.
Buckle up everyone....
