I’m getting ready to celebrate Kamala Harris’ win. I’ve been waiting for 8 years to make a Mazel Tov Cocktail.

If you build it they will come, amitright?.

Still, this is a nail-biter. And we all know what’s at stake. And what’s worse, even with a Kamala victory, there are still bad things ahead.

My husband and I are in different places today. I feel very confident that Harris is going to win. He feels the opposite. I won’t tell you what we are wagering….

There are two ways this can go: good-bad, and bad-bad. Either way, today will be the start of something....

The Good-Bad Scenario A: Kamala Harris wins (YAY!).

This is possibly the beginning of a new era — for women, for people of color, for democracy, for the path to restoring humanity and compassion and basic decency. Finding new ways to construct a healthy society. Maybe. Maybe help end the war. For sure it will restore a tiny bit of trust in humanity.

Well, for the most part.

But we also know that the 70 million people who voted for Trump will erupt into violence, making Jan 6 look like target practice. Apparently Proud Boys are making detailed plans on telegram. We have been here before. We all know how that ended.

The physical violence on Election Day and beyond is only part of it. There will also be judicial violence with endless lawsuits and Supreme Court rulings with corrupt Trumpist judges making outrageous rulings to support the cancelling of election results.

And there will be legislative violence, with members of congress under pressure to cancel election results.

And then there is the violent rhetoric that has infected our society. Fox will keep doing what Fox does, along with all the other outlets. Funded by Elon Musk. Bolstered by X. It will be a mess. That in itself is a task. (For the record, I have plans to work on this particular issue that God Willing I’ll be sharing news about very soon. Stay tuned…)

Kamala Harris in the White House will be a phenomenal first step towards a new world. It will take time, though, and hard work, for Kamala Harris to undo the damage of Trump years. Getting women’s bodily autonomy back. Stopping pregnant women in Texas from being killed by their doctors? It may take a while. Releasing from Oklahoma prisons women who had the misfortune to miscarry? It will also take a while. And quieting the social violence? Also a process.

And I fully believe in her commitment to end this war and address the current situation from a place of shared humanity and compassion. I know she is looking at long-term solutions that address Palestinian needs and Israeli needs. But that, too, will be a big challenge and will take time.

Nevertheless, she persisted.

And I’m definitely with Her.

The Bad-Bad scenario: Trump wins (oh, no….)

We know what a trump win will usher in. The entire Trump agenda, unhinged.

The end of women’s rights.

The end of immigration rights.

The end of freedom of expression.

The end of freedom of the press.

The end of libraries.

The end of minority rights.

The end of rule of law. .

The end of democratic systems.

Guns. Lots of guns.

Military takeovers of cities.

Mass deportations.

An emboldened Netanyahu, free of all restraints. (I can’t even write what I think would come next. It’s already so bad, and yet, there is room for it to be worse….)

Fears. A zillion new fears and threats in all directions.

It will be a new era of Machiavelli American-style — might is right, bullies win, honesty doesn’t matter, people don’t matter, only those in power matter, and they can do whatever they want. Violence as the norm.

Oh and possibly the end of the world, as in the planet.

I’m sure I missed a lot. Feel free to fill in the blanks.

There’s a lot at stake, and whatever happens today, this is just the beginning. And we need all our energies for the long haul.

So I’m off to hang out with my babies for a few hours, fill my bones with joy. So I have the emotional resources for whatever comes next.
