A conversation about sexual abuse like you've never heard
Shana Aaronson of Magen, Dr. Sharon Weiss-Greenberg, and I talked about the Jewish community and how our cultures support narcissistic abusers. Take a look
Last night, my friend and colleague Dr. Sharon Weiss-Greenberg hosted an event about sexual abuse in the Jewish community. On the panel with me was Shana Aaronson, the CEO of Magen, a wonderful organization in Israel that works with victims/survivors of abuse, provides vital services, and advocates for awareness and change. We I talked about many of the issues I raise in my book, When Rabbis Abuse: Power, Gender, and Status in the Dynamics of Sexual Abuse in Jewish Culture. We discussed grooming tactics, the charisma factor, and why high profile abusers get high profiles support…. still. It was great to hear insights from people who have been working in this field and are full of wisdom.
We also shared personal experiences from workplaces, communities, and schools — so many experiences…. so many experiences….. We also made some connections within Orthodox culture and women’s experiences, how girls/women are taught not to trust ourseves. All of us having grown up in Orthodox schools…. as girls… we talked about facing all the Orthodox language around girls’ bodies. These issues are connected….
It was a very powerful conversation, and I’m glad that we recorded it so people can continue to watch and benefit from the insights.
Watch here (and please read my personal note at the bottom….):
And on a personal note: The reason I’m able to speak the truth is that I am independent, unaffiliated, and unattached to any communal organization. That gives me my superpower. But independence also comes with a price — like, literally, it’s really hard financially… SOOOOOOOO…..If you like what I do and appreciate my contribution to the world, I would greatly appreciate your support in return. Paid subscriptions and financial support enable me to do my thing….
